They have taken a whole new approach and produced the most fun and affordable amphibious aircraft to land on the Australian shores (wet or dry). The combination of Hi-Tech modern material married with simple but proven engineering has culminated in the world’s latest aviation sensation the Catalina.

Just looking at the Catalina makes you want to fly it to a pond near you.

Fly Synthesis are well known for their design ability and the Catalina is another in the large range of aircraft now available from the local distributor Fly Synthesis Australia.

Made from corrosion free composites the wings and flying surfaces are the same as those used for the Storch HS. The hull designed to withstand the riggers of seawater is manufactured from fiberglass and Kevlar composite materials; the hardware components are made from stainless steel or marine grade aluminum.

The first thing you’ll notice is just how spacious the cockpit area is, unlike most airplanes where a narrow fuselage is the order of the day, hull type amphibians are made wider so that they handle better in the water (more room for the fishing gear and big fish, pilots, passengers included).
 
The Catalina whilst built for simplicity and fun is Hi-Tech and modern. Indeed the retractable landing gear is electrically operated and incorporates a positive locking check system. In the event of a flat battery, no problem, the emergency undercarriage lowering system is designed to lower and lock under gravity, and we all know how reliable gravity is.

The Catalina, was specifically, designed for land and water it’s a true amphibian, hence the name Catalina very well known to Australians. Even the 70-liter fuel tank is located in the hull thus lowering the CoG and further improving the stability and handling in the air and on the water. The Catalina comes with a water rudder and directional maneuverability on the water is excellent.
 
Take off and landings are easy and the boat hull design handles rough water better. Landing in 75m it will take-off in only 120m on water, less for dry land wheels down operations.

With large control surfaces, full span ailerons and high lift wing from the Storch the Catalina amphibian has excellent low speed performance for landing and take-off. Plus an efficient cruise speed of 68 knots, fuel economy 15 LPH.

Designed with safety in mind the Catalina comes with marine emergency equipment for Australian conditions.

Engine power comes from the reliable Rotax 582 DCDI 64Hp, engine delivering the best power to weight ratio for a lightweight fun affordable amphibian like this.
 
Instruments are analogue with optional FLYDAT or EFIS also available.

The wheels are made from Carbon fiber composite another innovation from Fly Synthesis. The Catalina is designed to act like a boat once in the water and the reinforced Kevlar keel is designed so you can beach the plane just as you would a boat plus this provides a lower C of G for better stability. Of course if you lower the tricycle undercarriage as you head slowly for the shore what’s stopping you from taxiing up the beach and stopping for a picnic?

The engineers at Fly Synthesis are currently working on a variable pitch propeller that will allow thrust reversing and therefore enhancing further the utility and water handling in confined spaces so you can show off your skills amongst the really posh (yacht) people.
